A fundraiser for the Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

As you no doubt already know, earlier this week the east coast was hit by the massive storm system known as Hurricane Sandy. My family was lucky to have weathered the storm mostly uneventfully – we never lost power or water, and our neighborhood in Brooklyn escaped relatively unscathed. This wasn’t the case for many parts of New York City and the surrounding areas, including our old neighborhood of the East Village, which is still without power. We count ourselves as doubly lucky because I delivered my son on October 21st, but was due October 27th, right before Hurricane Sandy hit New York. I have been especially impacted by the stories of the hospitals that had to be evacuated, and can’t imagine the stress of trying to get to a hospital during the hurricane or having to be evacuated from a hospital while giving birth.

We’d like to do what we can to help our great city get back on its feet, and so will be donating 50% of the sale price of all New York and Brooklyn necklaces sold between now and 6pm EST, November 7th, and 20% of the sale price of all other City Necklaces sold through November 7th to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Cities currently featured are New York, Brooklyn, Chicago, Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle.

Thank you for helping us to support our city!

Calligraphy Necklace: Naemi

The story behind the necklace, Naemi.

One of the challenges my wife faced growing up with an unusual name – in addition to everyone pronouncing it wrong, confusing it with other names, and peppering her with questions about it – was that she was never able to find items with her name on it. While many of her friends had little license plates on their bicycles proudly displaying their names, and while others returned from family vacations with personalized souvenirs, she was always left out. Thankfully, these beautiful necklaces provided the perfect opportunity for me to give her that special feeling of receiving something made just for her, and to celebrate her unique name and spirit!

Calligraphy Necklace: Karleigh and Gracie

The story behind the necklace, Karleigh and Gracie.

My daughter is so special, and she’s raising two of the most special daughters, Karleigh and Gracie.

My daughter is a third grade teacher and doesn’t make a lot of money. What she makes doesn’t go to her but to those two wonderful daughters. I try to buy her something every year to wear to school, but she never wants anything: ‘Just buy something for the girls’. They are wonderful, but I buy for them all the time!

I wanted to do something special for her, so I got her the necklace, with the names of her two favorite people! Karleigh and Gracie.

That’s why I did it. Because she’s so special!

Calligraphy Necklace: Salem

The story behind the necklace, Salem.

My necklace “Salem” is the name of my unborn child. I am due the end of this month, and I would love to wear the necklace to hospital after delivery. He is my first baby, but I did have a previous miscarriage. I was afraid of loving my baby and of acknowledging his existence at first, until I decided that I will allow myself to love him unconditionally no matter what happens. I also wanted to show my husband, who was also afraid to love our unborn child for fear of losing him, that it’s ok to let go and to welcome him into our lives as he gradually grows in me. It’s amazing how much you can love your baby before meeting him! So I ordered this wonderful necklace from Brevity as a reminder that our little bundle of joy will soon be in our arms.

Salem is my father-in-law’s name, which is Arabic for “Safe”. And we hope our son will be just that!

Calligraphy Necklace: Right from the Start

The story behind the necklace, Right from the Start.

“Right from the Start” is a lyric from a love song my husband wrote for me for Valentine’s Day in 2003. He was still in school and money was tight, so we agreed not to exchange gifts. He teased me that he had a special gift for me that didn’t cost anything, and I told my work buddies in an effort to guess what the gift might be. That night he got out his guitar as usual and then looked at me and said, “I have a song for you” and started to sing. This song is campy and cheery, not his usual style, and for many years he was a little shy about the song. Since that Valentine’s, he has privately performed countless requests and surprised me with birthday and Valentine’s Day serenades. When I saw the calligraphy necklaces, I thought of the song and asked my husband if he liked the idea, unsure of what he would say. He was flattered and leaped at the chance to buy the necklace for my birthday…my big 34! I love wearing it. I get tons of complements and I love telling the story. He is very proud that I tell the story, but is still too shy perform it publicly. But if you catch me alone, I will sing it to you.

Calligraphy Necklace: Pie

The story behind the necklace, Pie.

My girlfriend is moving in with me this month. My bedroom is painted very light, with white curtains and white bedding. She’s used to a much darker bedroom and when she’s with me she ends up using an eye mask to keep all that light out so she can sleep in the morning. When she wakes up, she pulls the mask up on one side so that she can see what’s going on – she looks a little like a very sleepy pirate. So, I started calling her “pirate”, and that got shortened to “pie” (which is also short for cutie-pie and sweetie-pie, obviously. And also the best dessert ever).
